S6E35: You can be dedicated to something and still need a break

Full transcript:

Good morning, happy Friday and welcome to the Language Confidence Project, the daily dose of language courage for people who love languages and those who really don’t, but have to learn one anyway.

And today, as we come to the end of another week, I just wanted to remind you that you can both really love something, and really need a break from it.

You can be truly dedicated to something and still get fed up sometimes.

You can be truly passionate about something and still count down to the end of the day sometimes.

You can be fully committed to something and veritably skip towards the weekend.

It really doesn’t make you any less committed.

You’re giving it so much, and it’s only natural that sometimes, you need to do other things. That you want to think about something else for a bit. You crave new experiences, new perspectives, a new routine. It doesn’t mean you don’t care.

We internalise the message from such a young age that real success, real focus, is about tunnel vision. And sometimes, it is, in short bursts. But when we are on a long journey like language learning, the healthiest thing we can do is bring our language learning into a balanced life, a life that supports all of us, our whole being, and not just the part of us that’s chasing a goal.

I hope you can take some time to do things that make you happy this weekend, language learners. We do our best work when we are fully recharged.

And if you’d like to support my work and get access to a growing community of creative, multipassionate and mission-driven linguists, I’d love to invite you to take a look at my Patreon Community. I offer a monthly meetup to meet likeminded language learners and talk about language, productivity, weekly coworking and costudying so you don’t have to study alone, and a monthly Q&A to get personalised advice from me. Our next meetup is Tuesday 25th June, so, next Tuesday, and I would love to see you there.

Have a wonderful day, have a wonderful weekend, and I will see you at 7am UK time on Monday.
